In 1 Samuel chapter 1 we read the story of Hannah. She suffered at the hand of her adversary, her husbands other wife. She was having children while she had none. The agony and suffering went on for years until she prayed a prayer of desperation. In it she said that if God would give here a child she would give the child to him.
I know I have been through long struggles and longing that have brought me to a place of surrender. If we don't die to self of course it won't belong to God. This helps us to understand the process that we might be going through right now. I know that when I saw this truth it helped me know that the promises God has made will come to pass, but it might take a bit more work to bring me to desperation and death so that it will be Gods. Aware of that I want to surrender early and save the pain. Be encouraged the result is awesome.
